Standardize the referencing and addressing of geographical objects

Geographical objects are defined in different ways by different people for different purposes, and references can be by name, number or description. BS 7666 Spatial datasets for geographical referencing identifies some types of spatial references and provides a way of cross-referencing between datasets collected using different types of spatial references.

The revisions to the BS 7666 series are:

NEW - BS 7666-0:2006 Spatial datasets for geographical referencing. General model for gazetteers and spatial referencing 
BS 7666-0 defines the essential components of a gazetteer of geographic locations and provides a general model of spatial references based upon named spatial units in the UK. It defines the attributes of each geographic location to be recorded in a gazetteer, and the metadata associated with the gazetteer. It provides the basis for the other parts of BS 7666 by defining general structures to enable gazetteers of a range of classes of geographic locations to be created in a consistent way. Specific gazetteers of particular classes of locations are defined in the other parts of BS 7666.

BS 7666-0:2006 supersedes BS 7666-3:2000 which will be withdrawn.

NEWLY REVISED - BS 7666-1:2006 Spatial datasets for geographical referencing. Specification for a street gazetteer
BS 7666-1 specifies the data to be maintained in a gazetteer of streets, consistent with Part 0 of this standard. This enables different users of street information to use the same data with consistency of content, accuracy, currency and format. Different ways of referencing a street are defined so that data can be accessed by street name, description, route number, unique reference number or external cross-reference.

BS 7666-1:2006 supersedes BS 7666-1:2000 and BS 7666-4:2002 which will be withdrawn.

NEWLY REVISED - BS 7666-2:2006 Spatial datasets for geographical referencing. Specification for a land and property gazetteer
BS 7666-2 specifies the logical data structure for a gazetteer of land and property, consistent with Part 0 of this standard. It is based upon the concept of a basic land and property unit (BLPU), and specifies the data to be recorded and maintained in a gazetteer. It also specifies the way in which the boundary of a BLPU may be represented and linked to the gazetteer. It does not provide a database design or a transfer format.

BS 7666-2:2006 supersedes BS 7666-2:2000 which will be withdrawn.

NEW - BS 7666-5:2006 Spatial datasets for geographical referencing. Specification for a delivery point gazetteer 
BS 7666-5 specifies the logical data structure and data content for a gazetteer of delivery points, for purposes of identification, access and validation of service requests. It provides a method of referencing delivery points by means of unique references and descriptive delivery addresses. It does not provide a database design or a transfer format.

This part of BS 7666 is for use by suppliers of delivery and collection services, such as distribution organizations. It facilitates data sharing to enable the provision of collaborative services, and provides a consistency of references for analysis and planning purposes.

Please note:
These revised parts supersede BS 7666-1:2000, BS 7666-2:2000, BS 7666-3:2000 and BS-7666-4:2002. The new Part 0 has subsumed Part 3: Specification for addresses.  Part 1 has subsumed Part 4: Specification for recording public rights of way but in other respects is similar in scope to that published previously. The scope of Part 2 is largely unchanged. Part 5 is new in scope. Parts BS 7666-1:2000, BS 7666-2:2000, BS 7666-3:2000 and BS-7666-4:2002 will be withdrawn on publication of the revised standards. Thus Parts 3 and 4 will not form part of the standard although there will now be a Part 5. Renumbering has not taken place to avoid any confusion with the withdrawn standards.

BS EN ISO 19111:2005 Geographic information. Spatial referencing by coordinates
This standard defines the conceptual schema for the description of spatial referencing by coordinates. It describes the minimum data required to define one-, two- and three-dimensional coordinate reference systems. It allows additional descriptive information to be provided. It also describes the information required to change coordinate values from one coordinate reference system to another.
